Diversity and floristic composition of the semi-deciduous mesophilous forest of La Cruz site, Manabí, Ecuador

Abstract

This study evaluated the floristic diversity and structural composition of the semi-deciduous mesophytic forest located in La Cruz locality, La América parish, Manabí province, Ecuador, with the objective of characterizing its successional status and providing baseline ecological information for conservation and sustainable management. Five temporary sampling plots of 20 × 20 m were established, in which all tree and woody shrub individuals with diameter at breast height (DBH) ≥ 10 cm were recorded. Floristic parameters (relative abundance, frequency, dominance, and Importance Value Index) and diversity indices (Shannon, Simpson, Pielou, and Fisher-Alpha) were calculated, together with structural variables such as density, basal area, diameter distribution, vertical stratification, and Structural Complexity Index. A total of 109 individuals belonging to 28 species, 26 genera, and 17 botanical families were recorded. The dominant species were Quararibea cordata, Guazuma ulmifolia, Triplaris cumingiana, and Laurus nobilis, which define the canopy architecture. Total density reached 545 individuals·ha⁻¹ and basal area 23.10 m²·ha⁻¹. The inverted “J”-shaped diameter distribution and the Structural Complexity Index value (11.04) indicate continuous regeneration and an intermediate successional stage, suggesting a structurally consolidated secondary forest with moderate diversity.
